That's a great carving Gary, really like how it's done.

Let me ask the same question that I just asked Lynn on his blog... Why do we see so many dour looking Native Americans? The overwhelming majority of all Native American carvings are frowning. Were they all that sad? Is it that our photographic records captured only the bad times and not the good ... or are we using that "keep America Beautiful" commercial with the crying Native American as our stereotype?

Hello Bob, I am not sure how to answer this question, but in every photo of Native Americans I have seen, I have never seen one smile. I am sure that they did at times, but I have never seen one.

Gary,

I would put a feather down the side of his head to establish that he is an Indian. It is just from the point of view that you need to give people what they expect in order to really get their approval. I carved and Indian for a friend and I think he wanted a full headdress. You can't please everybody.

Great eyes.

Hey Bob,

I think I may have an idea about the Indians not smiling. When you think about it, what exactly did they have to be happy about? The illegal immigrants just kept coming and taking all their land. They killed off just about the entire buffalo population and then told the Indians where they had to live and that they could not hunt the way they always had. I think a lot of the Indians were semi-nomadic in that they followed the herd. Not to mention how the cavalry enforced decisions about how the Indians should be kept in their place almost wiping them out as well. So many lies and broken treaties, I don't think I would have been smiling either. I'm not smiling about the situation in America today either, at least not very often.....

Just my thoughts,

Terry

Gary -- This is not meant to offend, but if it does feel free to delete.

I forgot to mention that I like the carving. You could carve one of those bone vests that the indians wore and add on that round thing (not sure what it was exactly) that they wore around their neck. Plus I think Wayne's idea about the feather would add additional interest.

OBTW - I really like your blog and all the tutorials.

Gary, Indian looks good....would be interesting to see him after he is painted.......Have you ever thought about doing a tutorial on this type of carving for those of us that do not have the opportunity to attend one of your classes? It sounds like it would be a great experience to attend some.
Thanks for the great and interesting work you do on your website.

Hello Terry and Bruce, thanks for your comments! Sorry to post so late, we have been without power here for about 4 days. Sometimes I do add the Bone vest and other things, but didn't on this one. Bruce, I did paint the Indian, but I gave him to a friend before I took a picture of him. I will get a Picture and post it soon though. I am planning on doing a tutorial of a Native American soon, so hang in there.
Thanks again guys!
